What Is A Colonoscopy

Colonoscopies: All You Need to Know

What is a Colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy is a medical procedure that helps your doctor examine the inside of your colon and rectum. A colonoscopy can help your doctor diagnose certain gastrointestinal conditions like colorectal cancer, or inflammatory bowel disease. This procedure can also be used to remove colon polyps which can turn into cancer.

How to Prepare for a Colonoscopy

Before your colonoscopy, you will need to follow a special diet and empty your bowels completely. Your doctor will give you specific instructions on how to do this. It is also important to stop taking any blood thinners or anti-inflammatory medications before your procedure.

What Happens During a Colonoscopy?

During the procedure, you will be given a sedative to make you relaxed and comfortable. Your doctor will then insert the colonoscope, which is a thin flexible tube with a light and camera, into your rectum and advance it through your colon. Your doctor can see the inside of your colon and rectum on a screen.

What to Expect After a Colonoscopy?

After a colonoscopy, you may experience some mild cramping or bloating. You may also have some bleeding from your rectum. These symptoms usually go away within a day or two. You should be able to resume your normal activities within a few days.
